well, good morning, everyone. happy tuesday. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. things are going to heat up, chris tona. >> it is going to be a warm one. good tuesday morning to you, temperatures starting out in the 50s. we'll jump right into summer-like levels as we get into this afternoon. make sure you're ready for that. temperatures in the 50s to start and in the north bay started out in the -- the upper 80s as of today. tomorrow, we are now expecting, expecting triple digits. i'll tell you where in just a

minute. it's traffic tuesday and it's early, mike. >> you sound happy about triple digits. live look at fremont. this is a smooth drive right now with 880 southbound and the headlights south of auto mall parkway. let me show you on the maps, at least for the next few minutes there is a crew blocking the off ramp and the reroute further south towards warren or mission and that is a significant loop arou because of construction in the area. allow another five to seven minutes if you have to loop back around northbound and get back off there from the northbound side of 680. north 680 an earlier crash and we may still have activity on the shoulder and second lane may be clear after an earlier crash happened there and the rest of the bay moving very smoothly. fremont moves smoothly, too. we'll track it and send it back to you for now. those deadly tornadoes across much of the midwest and south are on the move again this morning. officials have now raised the

death toll from yesterday's storms to 11. that means at least 28 people are now dead from tornadoes yesterday and sunday. tens of thousands of homes and businesses are without power in alabama, mississippi and kentucky and the damage is into the millions of dollars. >> rain and hailing and all that and everything, you know. >> were you scared? >> yeah, i was. but one thing about it -- >> the storms are not over. georgia is bracing for bad weather later today. parts of arkansas have been declared disaster areas. state senator jim bell will present a new law strengthening the punishment for people who cyberbully. in response to a bay area case that got national attention. the proposal is called audrie

pott she took her own life after pictures of her assault were circulated among her classmates in 2012. the three boys convicted in the attack served 30 to 45 days in juvenile hall for the crime. audrie's law would make it easier to charge suspects of adults and could include potential prison time and add the possibility of increase prison time for people who electronically share pictures or messages of the crime, as well. meanwhile, the white house will announce new measures today to combat sexual assault on college campus. a white house task force came up with several recommendations for schools across the country. first, as you can see, the task force asking students to conduct surveys to better understand the extent of sexual assault. the task force also asking schools bystander intervention programs to encourage people to step in and the report suggests several ways schools can help victims of sexual assault after the crime occurs. the task force created a website

called notalone.cov it has more resources. a bay area congressman and san jose state students will hold a news conference in hopes of stopping a deportation of a state's mother. he is part of the dreamers. an undocumented student and his mother is about to be deported. in his quest to keep his mother in the country, he convinced to introduce a private relief bill. done only once or twice during each congressional session and it is specific to one person who demonstrates a compelling humanitarian reason to stay. >> i, myself, am a dreamer and i want to contribute to this country because this is where i grew up in. i consider myself to be an american. we don't come here to make trouble. we come here because we want to succeed. it's nice to know that i have a congresswoman who wants to help my family be reunited. >> gonzalez also has two

siblings, an 18-year-old college-bound sister and a little brother in sixth grade. another group of san jose students trying to get out of class to respond to fee increases. the students are upset about the student technology fee intrabused back in 2012 and considered consistently increased. the students say despite the title most money goes to refund the athletic department. the woman accused of stabbing her baby boy to death will be in court this morning. ashley newton already confessed to stabbing her 7-month-old son after a car crash in livermore. investigators found her near the scene of the crash on saturday holding the body of the baby in her arms. they say she was also cut and they believe those injuries were self-inflicted. lawyers for aldon smith will meet with a judge today to talk about the dui and gun charger star faces. the linebacker has received an

exemption and likely not be in court. the case stemmed from two separate incidents but the charges were combined in november. was arrested for making a fake bomb threat at l.a.x. earlier this month but no charges filed in that case. we could find out today if three middle school students charged after investigators say they broke into a high school and killed classroom pets. santa clara police say three teens broke into wilcox high school over the weekend and killed a rabbit, a duck and a rooster that was kept in classrooms. the students are also accused of vandalizing a snack shop and several cars being used in an auto shop class. >> obviously, it is disturbing when you have middle-age schooled children involved and the animals were our primary concern. >> if the students are charged, they will likely face cruelty to animals, burglary charges. officials will hire salvage crews today to pull the wreckage

of a small plane out of the bay. crews located the wreckage of the cessna yesterday in 13 feet of water. the pilot is presumed dead. witnesses say the cessna and a hawker sea fury were flying close when that took part of the cessna's wing off. >> just rotated over, 90 degrees on the side and just went like this. >> the hawker had some tail damage, but landed safely about 100 miles away. looked similar to that plane. investigators have not released the names of the pilots, but they did know each other. turning to our microclimate forecast at 4:37. a live look at san francisco. it is cool out there today, but a major, major warm up is on the way. >> it is going to get pretty hot. let's look at christina she has a look at that forecast. temperatures climb by 40 degrees in some instances. today happy tuesday to you.

temperatures pretty balmy out there in san francisco. starting out 56 degrees and tonight one of those nights if you don't have an air conditioner in the city by the bay, it could be rather balmy for you. we're expecting this number to drop off into the 60s as we head into tomorrow morning, otherwise, pretty chilly out there in places like livermore and santa rosa where we are starting out in the 40s this morning. i want to tell the story of the day with your wind speed map, you can really see what's going on. typically we get that cool ocean air and all of our wind arrows are pointing from the ocean to the land and the opposite for today and as that wind moves from land to sea, it warms along the way, it's called offshore flow e. for us, that means we're going it see record breaking temperatures as of today and even warmer conditions over the next couple days. hour-by-hour for the south bay, 65 degrees at 9:00 a.m. between noon and 3:00 p.m., temperatures will start to jump and we're talking about

temperatures jumping to 87 degrees by 3:00 p.m. even when that sun starts to drop off, it's dark by 9:00 a.m. i want to make sure if you're ready for this. especially if you work outdoors the hottest day we've seen. only to be trumped by tomorrow. temperatures work like this. 88 degrees in the south bay and 79 degrees in san francisco today. you'll trade that out for the 80s tomorrow. 88 degrees in the north bay and 89 degrees in the east bay. i'll tell you when this heat is going to break coming up in my next report and also we'll talk about some of the concerns that come up whenever we get this hot weather, especially when it comes on so strong, so fast. let's check your drive first, here's mike inouye. east shore freeway and looks like a good volume of traffic. right now you're at speed and look at the a the good spacing between the cars not a big deal through berkeley and show you the maps and speed sensors all around.

eastbound 24 right above piedmont we see a little slowing around that highway 13 and nothing unusual there and really nothing to go on and just a couple slow-moving vehicles. we have a smooth flow of traffic around the rest of your bay, the south bay, the peninsula, easy flow of traffic. over to the tri-valley, we have your traditional build. the way it works in the bay, first traffic increase and show you what it looks like as you get over towards dublin. this is over in dublin and even at this hour of the morning, it has a lot of headlights but a very smooth flow, so, this is normal for 440, back to you. >> all right, mike, thank you much. we do have breaking news for you this morning. this is out of atlanta. we have reports of at least six people that have been shot at a fedex facility. again, in atlanta. our nbc crews that are on the way to that facility. we have not confirmed that number, but we will continue to follow that news as it develops and bring it to you.

welcome back, everyone. 4:44 is expecting to be a defining day for the nba. allege racist marks from the owners of the clippers. at a news conference this morning silver could announce disciplinary action against donald sterling. in a privately taped conversation he is accused of saying he didn't want african-american men going to games with his girlfriend. sterling could be suspended indefinitely, fined up to $1 million and even be forced to sell the team among other things. former players want the league to come down hard. >> the nba deals with this in a very quick and forthright

manner. they will continue to have some credibili credibility. >> you would hope that the treatment is fair, you hope that it's the result that satisfies players, the fans, sponsors, everybody at large. >> major companies not waiting for sterling to be punished, some already cutting ties with the clippers including bay area as well as kia, red bull, state farm and mercedes. in a show of solidarity miami heat staged a silent protest against sterling. they wore t-shirts inside out to hide the team logo before last night's game against the bobcats. the clippers staged a similar protest at oracle arena on sunday. while the basketball community waits for silver's announcement later today, marc jackson letting his feelings known. he wants fans to boycott tonight's game and stay home. jackson says players and coaches

have to be there because it's their job, but he says fans should not give their hard earned money to someone like sterling. a lot of eyes will certainly be on today's news conference scheduled for 11:00 this morning. interesting on how all of this plays ahead of game five down in los angeles tonight. we'll, of course, continue to cover everything. stay with us for continuing coverage and all morning long, any time we're not on air, head to nbcbayarea.com for the latest information. supreme court justices will hear two of the suspects they arrest. law enforcement agencies argue without searching cell phones right away, the phones and any evidence on them can be wiped remotely, but privacy advocates say most cell phones today carry so much information about a person, it's really more like searching a home than thumb through a wallet or a purse.

the car of the future, the kind that doesn't need a driver may be closer to becoming reality. google has logged about 700,000 miles to this point most of them freeway miles but as you can see in this google video posted on youtube. self-driving cars have been cruising through the city of mountainview, as well. the project's director said the technology is getting better and the cars can detect hundreds of distinct objects at the same time. >> we taught the vehicle to recognize and navigate through construction zones. they spot the orange signs and closures early and we can change lanes safely. >> you won't have human error and you won't have bad judgment and you should, theoretically, have a safer environment, especially if all cars -- >> they can detect a bicyclist indicating a turn. google says no firm decision on when the technology might be available to the public. netflix reached a deal with verizon in hopes of getting content to users faster. we'll turn to courtney reagan

live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning, courtney. >> good morning, scott. stocks rallied at the open and fell middey and recovered by the close. confirmed it's making a new takeover bid for astrazenica and the nasdaq slipping one point to 4074. netflix get faster delivery of its shows and movies. the second deal the company has reached to pay for access to broadbound networks that it argues should be free. the parent of nbc universal, but hastings later said he only made the deal in order to give customers better service. amazon holding up six of its warehouses for tours including in san bernardino, the hour-long tours will be held on the first and third tuesday of each month and can be booked online. amazon won't say what people will see where millions of items

the month. as we kick off may, we're going to stay nice and warm and then yesterday i told i was looking 15 days out for rain chances and we have a slight chance for showers as we head through the next 15 days. dive into that forecast a little bit later and what comes with the warm weather and, typically, that is air quality that suffers as we head throughout the next couple days we are expecting these levels to fall into the moderate and maybe even the unhealthy range. still in the good to moderate range. . get out there and enjoy the day and, yeah, get out there early if you have any sort of outdoor activities that cause you to sweat. as we head lout the day, pollen levels are low and we expect to have the numbers creep up. the high pressure really builds in. let me take you through your day. good-looking day. coast is clear to start and patchy fog inland and especially up in the north bay. no reduced visibility below four miles just yet. if it does happen, i'll let you know. afternoon warming and that is building offshore breeze which keeps that coast nice and clear

and for us temperatures are going to be very warm as a result. your sun will set at 7:57. our days are getting longer and hotter. today much warmer than yesterday, but not as warm as where we are headed tomorrow. 94 degrees in the south bay, i'm expecting triple digits in places like gilroy where we get five to eight degrees warmer and offshore wind events. and then by thursday, that heat starts to break just a little bit by friday we'll start to level off and then a nice, comfortable weekend and we'll talk about that coming up. right now back to you, scott and laura. >> thanks so much. 4:51. new this morning south korea's president is apologizing for the government's response to the deadly ferry disaster. in the meantime, strong currents made it difficult for divers to search for the sunken ferry. 97 passengers still believed to be missing. one diver said all he's focus

with the harsh conditions is just get the bodies back to their families. the coast guard confirmed today the official death count has risen above 200. santa clara will consider a new restaurant grading system for the county this morning. this comes after an nbc bay area investigation. the proposal would make restaurants display color placards. those with two or more violations would get a conditional pass and a yellow placard. those that do not correct serious problems will get a red placard and other bay area counties have similar grading systems in place but santa clara does not. still ahead, 0 for 3. the sharks failed to knock out the kings, again. reaction from team teal coming up. we're looking over here towards the san mateo bridge and from time to time we see this camera shaking and christina is
